The primary function of the acrosome is to facilitate the penetration of the sperm into the egg during fertilization. It contains a variety of enzymes, the most important of which is acrosin. Upon activation, acrosin and other enzymes are released in a process known as the acrosome reaction (Buffone, et al., 2014). These enzymes degrade the extracellular matrix surrounding the egg, thereby enabling the sperm to penetrate the egg’s protective layer.

The acrosome reaction is a crucial step in the process of fertilization. It involves a series of biochemical events that result in the exocytosis of the acrosomal contents.
